How to Teach Yourself the Basics of Karate

The philosophy behind karate is vast and complex. It stems from thousands of years of armed and unarmed combat. Techniques that were perfected hundreds of years ago are still being perfected over and over again by each new generation. Buddhism, Taoism, and the code of Bushido have all played parts in the development of the martial arts philosophy. Karate in its modern form was established around 400 years ago in Japan, with its roots mainly derived from Chinese Kung Fu. See Step 1 below to start teaching yourself the basics of this art

Basic Karate Stances
Basic Karate Stances Front Stance Start by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart. For a right stance, bend your right knee and step back with your left foot so that your back leg is almost straight. For a left stance, switch your feet. Make sure your front knee is bent enough so that you can’t see your front toes. Your back foot should face forward. Back Stance Stand with your toes pointed out about 45 degrees. Bend your knees and step your front foot forward. Keep the majority of your wait on your back leg so that if your front foot off were to be knocked off the ground you would keep your balance. Horse Riding Stance Stand tall and step your feet to the sides so that they’re slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Point your little toes forward and bend your knees.

Basic Karate Moves
Basic Karate Moves The Karate Chop To perform a karate chop, put your thumb against your index finger. Bend your fingers slightly and use the side of your hand closest to your pinky to make contact with your target. Chop all the way through your target without pulling back. Roundhouse Kick Keep your hands up before initiating the kick to replicate how you would set up in an actual fight. Lift the leg you’re going to kick with and bend at the knee so that your calf is almost touching your thigh. Shift your weight to your supporting foot as you snap your leg forward. Your momentum should carry you toward your target. Make contact with your target before your leg is completely straight. Basic Punch Assume a balanced stance before initiating the punch. Close your fist and bring it to your side. Punch in a straight line to deliver the most force. Your elbow should brush against your side, and aim to contact your target with your first two knuckles.
